Tutorial Title: Design of Protection and Control Schemes for Microgrids

Abstract: This tutorial presents a comprehensive framework for designing protection and control schemes tailored to modern microgrids. It highlights the unique challenges posed by bidirectional power flows, variable fault currents, and high penetration of inverter based resources. The material introduces key protection principles, including adaptive relaying, protection coordination, and communication assisted coordination. It also examines hierarchical control architectures that integrate primary, secondary, and tertiary control layers for stable microgrid operation. Special emphasis is placed on seamless transition between grid connected and islanded modes, advanced control schemes, and resilience under extreme operating conditions.  The tutorial further discusses IEEE standards and requirements that influence protection and control design. Overall, it equips engineers and researchers with the analytical tools and design methodologies needed to develop robust, flexible, and future ready microgrid protection systems.
